Why Exercise Is So Important For Your Dog

Keeping your dog healthy and happy is the most important part of being a responsible dog owner. Just like humans, regular exercise is imperative to a dog’s health, both body and mind.  No matter if your dog is big or small or young or old, dogs need to exercise daily according to their health. Without activity, your dog will become bored, frustrated and unhealthy. Exercise tones the muscles, helps the body and metabolic system to function properly, and engages the mind. Dogs that lack from physical activity and mental stimulation often turn to destructive behaviours that can be fixed with regular exercise.  We’ve compiled a list of reasons why exercise is so important for a dog’s essential heath:

  • Prevents obesity and associated health risks (high blood pressure, diabetes, liver disease, osteoarthritis, increased risk of developing tumors/cancer)
  • Strengthens cardiovascular health and muscles
  • Regular and scheduled walks promote housetraining
  • Reduced behavioral problems through physical, intellectual, and social stimulation
  • Reduced digestive problems and constipation
  • Increased agility
  • Builds confidence and trust, especially in timid dogs
  • Exercise promotes obedience
  • Controls weight
  • Increased social skills with people and other dogs
  • Exercise stimulates the mind, especially new physical activities, surroundings or games
  • Exercise creates bonding opportunities between you and your dog
  • Activity slows down the ageing process
  • Minimise unwanted dog behaviour like digging or chewing that is caused by boredom

How much exercise should I give my dog? The amount of exercise a dog needs varies according to size, breed and health, always consult your local vet if you have any concerns or questions, however here is a rough guideline for the amount of exercise you should be giving your dog:  Dogs should spend between 30 minutes to 2 hours doing physical activity per day. However, working, hunting and herding breeds of dogs, that are in good health, should be get at least 30 minutes of vigorous exercise along with their 1-2 hours of daily activity.  If you have any questions regarding your dogs exercise routine or limits due to health issues, please contact your local vet to discuss further.
