Kangaroo on the Hop with Pricing
As we are all aware, Australia has been in a drought, not that anyone might believe us now; lets still remember we are still in drought. Many areas are not getting rain, check out Atkinson dam level 6.5% just to keep us aware of the reality.
So not only do our farmers feel it, but so do our wild game industry. So much so that the Western Kangaroo, which is nearly the most prolific breeder, has been placed on a 1-year moratorium so that their numbers can come back. Unfortunately, this is one of the main breeds that the exporters use and now that places not only price pressure because the exports have deeper pockets and pay more, but also pressure on the domestic guys to supply product to the domestic market.
Then because of the drought the farmers at the same time have been busy putting very tall fences up to protect their precious resource of water and future crops (understandably). This has also made it more difficult to harvest the allowable Kangaroo population, with many perishing at the fence lines they used to take to get water, and therefore wasting the resource.
Then the Fires…
Well that has been a month or 2 really putting a lot of pressure on the kangaroo population in NSW so those businesses naturally moved to other states to achieve their requirement.
Because of the above points the large exporters are going further afield and paying shooters extra if they fill their containers, forcing the small abattoirs and pet abattoirs to increase their price to keep their shooters and to keep supply. This battle has been warming up more so with the drought.
Now the rains…
Every living creature thanks the rain for falling, however now we have had 2 weeks where there have been no roo and we are forced to buy from the export frozen market as they are the only ones with kangaroo for sale. What the rain also means is grass starts growing and thank goodness, as all protein producers need grass. However, the shooters can’t just go to a waterhole to find them all, the population disperses and are 5 times harder to find to bring in the requirement.
This article is to help explain the price pressure that is now on the Kangaroo Protein, which in the main has been a once a year price movement product, opposite to beef that moves monthly. It is looking like Kangaroo is becoming a little volatile with many of the above issues adding up to an interesting year ahead for this protein.
There have been many studies showing that Kangaroo is one of the best nutritionally for both human and furkids, but also they are better for our environment. http://www.gmagazine.com.au/news/217/kangaroo-meat-much-better-environment, https://sustainabletable.org.au/all-things-ethical-eating/kangaroo/ , https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/oct/13/australias-kangaroo-cull-humane-and-sustainable-or-exercise-in-cruelty
We’d like to thank you for your support! We know that our favorite protein will breed well, with many joeys being born as the rains take a breath now, and the future is looking good thanks to the rains.
