What exactly is Diatomaceous Earth?
Diatomaceous earth is a non-toxic natural substance that is made from crushed fossils of freshwater organisms and marine life.
It is a type of powder made from the sediment of fossilized algae found in bodies of water around the world. Because the cells of these algae were high in a compound called silica, the dried sediment produced from these fossils are also very high in silica. In fact, Diatomaceous earth contains about 80%-90% silica.
Through a microscope, the particles of Diatomaceous earth look like tiny bits of broken glass and are deadly to any insect, however completely harmless to animals. It can kill lice, ticks, fleas or mites on your dog.
It doesn’t poison insects or paralyze them, however, like some other pharmaceutical products do. The razor-sharp particles touch the pests, and pierce the insects’ protective coating. The bugs then quickly dehydrate and die and the particles affect larvae in the same way.
Enriched with minerals, Diatomaceous Earth offers numerous benefits, especially for dogs. See the 5 main benefits for dogs below.
