Coprophagia

Coprophagia (eating feces)

Description:

A condition characterized by a dog eating their own stool or the stool of other animals. Most commonly, dogs engage in this behavior because they aren’t getting enough of a particular nutrient, or there’s an imbalance in their digestive system. For example, many dogs that are lacking digestive enzymes or microbes (especially common among dogs fed a processed-food diet) exhibit coprophagia. They may also learn to do it by watching other dogs, or they may exhibit stool-eating behavior when they are under extreme stress.

Symptoms:

  • Eating the feces of other animals
  • Eating their own feces

Natural Solutions:

  • Feed your dog a balanced, varied, raw species-appropriate diet
  • Include green tripe regularly in your dog’s meals. It’s full of digestive enzymes and probiotics, so it’s especially helpful in replenishing those vital nutrients.
  • Clean up after your dog (or any of your pets) goes to the bathroom. Removing the feces guarantees they won’t be able to eat it.
  • Ensure your dog gets adequate exercise and enrichment
  • Make sure any over-the-counter deterrents (which are only effective about 2% of the time) are non-toxic and don’t contain monosodium glutamate (MSG)
  • Consider trying microbiome restorative therapy
